Muslims have been passing through Port Pirie since the 1880s. There was a need for a Masjid to meet the needs of the community. In 2001 a plot of land was bought with the intention of establishing a masjid.
The land was found to be unfeasible. The Islamic Society of Regional South Australia was set up to establish masajid in the mid North of SA. An offer was made for a property in Port Augusta in 2016 which was rejected by the seller. A few properties were inspected in Port Pirie before 125 Gertrude Street was found. The fund raising was done in cooperation with the Maktab Association of SA.
The keys were given on the 1st of Ramadhan 1440 (27 May 2017).
